In a significant move towards fuel conservation, the Tripura government announced on May 25, 2026, that all government offices will now remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays. This decision, made during a Cabinet meeting led by Transport, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, aims to implement strict expenditure-control measures and reduce fuel and electricity consumption across the state's administrative operations.
Previously, government offices observed closures only on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The new policy is expected to streamline operations while promoting energy-saving practices. Minister Chowdhury stated, "These measures will reduce electricity and fuel consumption in government offices through strict energy-savings measures," underscoring the government's commitment to sustainability.
- Two-day weekend policy — All government offices will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays to save fuel.
- Adjusted working hours — Office timings will now start at 9:30 AM and end at 6 PM.
- Response to PM's appeal — The measures align with Prime Minister Modi's call for fuel conservation.
Adding to this initiative, the working hours on weekdays will change to begin at 9:30 AM instead of the previous 10 AM, extending the workday until 6 PM. These adjustments are part of the government's broader strategy to comply with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal for fuel conservation and the increased use of electric vehicles. The Minister also announced the immediate withdrawal of a roster system for Group C and Group D employees, requiring all government staff to attend the office daily.
Chowdhury elaborated on additional measures that the government has undertaken, including conducting official meetings virtually, promoting the use of electric and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, and minimizing vehicle usage at the administrative level. The government is also taking steps to avoid large-scale gatherings, both political and non-political, to further conserve resources. Furthermore, he indicated that the Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 81 vacancies across various departments, including the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and the Public Works Department, to enhance operational efficiency.
