In a decisive action against drug trafficking, the Bihar Police successfully seized over 455 kg of ganja during operations in the Supaul and Madhubani districts. This significant haul reflects the police's ongoing efforts to combat the rampant narcotics trade in the state. During the first operation, conducted by the Pipra Police Station in Supaul, officers intercepted a pickup truck based on a tip-off about a large consignment of cannabis being transported.
The operation began early on Monday at approximately 4 a.m. when a special police team, led by Sub-Inspector Rajiv Kumar Singh, set up a blockade on Singheshwar Road. Upon noticing the police, the driver attempted to escape, but officers quickly apprehended the vehicle. Upon inspection, they discovered a hidden compartment beneath the rear seating area filled with sacks of cannabis, cleverly disguised with empty plastic crates to evade detection. The total weight of the seized ganja was reported at 427.95 kg, with an estimated market value of around ₹1.71 crore.
- Five arrests made — The primary suspect, identified as Upendra Kumar Yadav, along with four others, was taken into custody for their involvement in the smuggling operation.
- Separate operation in Madhubani — Another police team seized 28 kg of ganja from a passenger bus, arresting four individuals who were transporting the drug.
- Ongoing investigations — Authorities are actively pursuing leads to identify additional members of the smuggling network.
In a related operation in Madhubani, police from the Narahiya Police Station intercepted a passenger bus at Bhutaha Chowk on NH-27. Acting on intelligence that four youths were carrying narcotics, the police conducted a thorough search of the bus. They discovered 28 kg of ganja concealed within bags belonging to passengers in the sleeper section. The arrested individuals from this operation were identified as Badri Kumar, Indrajit Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, and Ashish Kumar, all of whom have been remanded into judicial custody.
These operations highlight the Bihar Police's commitment to tackling drug-related crimes, which have seen a surge in recent years. The police are now focusing on dismantling the larger smuggling networks that facilitate the trafficking of such dangerous substances. The successful seizure of such significant quantities of ganja underscores the importance of community intelligence and proactive policing in the fight against drugs.
