This Tamil Nadu ammonia gas leak case is honestly very upsetting, because again it is workers who paid biggest price inside one industrial unit . On June 21 ,two migrant workers died and over 46 others had to be hospitalized after toxic gas leaked at seafood export facility in Thiruvallur district.
The incident happened at St Peter's and Paul Seafoods Exports in Kannigaiper village . As per details, the leak came from a measuring valve in shrimp processing unit, and within short time many workers started facing serious symptoms.
And these were not small symptoms ah. Workers reportedly complained of breathing difficulties, dizziness, and vomiting after exposure to ammonia gas . Most affected people were migrant workers from northern states, which makes whole thing feel even more helpless.
Emergency teams were rushed in,including specialized unit from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Chennai . Evacuation and immediate help started after leak, but by then damage had already happened.
Among those taken to hospital, nine individuals were admitted to ICU at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai . As of now, five workers remain in critical condition, and some may need to be shifted to hospitals in Chennai for advanced treatment.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Two migrant workers died after ammonia gas leak at St Peter's and Paul Seafoods Exports.
- Over 46 others were hospitalized, with nine in ICU and five still critical.
- A three-member panel from industrial safety, pollution control, and public health departments will report within three days.
Government side has now stepped in. Chief Minister Vijay has ordered strict action against those responsible, and officials have also arrested owner of seafood processing unit as part of ongoing investigation . Tbh,this is bare minimum after such serious failure.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar has also extended condolences to families affected by tragedy . Local authorities are saying support is being given to victims and their families, but for people who lost someone, these words can only do limited thing.
And bigger question is still hanging there… how did such dangerous leak happen inside working facility, and why were so many workers exposed before things were brought under control?
