This ammonia gas leak near Chennai is honestly very disturbing,especially because workers who probably came just to earn daily bread ended up losing lives inside workplace . Incident happened on June 21, 2026,at St Peter and Paul Seafood Exports Pvt Ltd located in Kannigaipair Village,near Chennai.
Reports say two women migrant workers died after ammonia gas leak,and over 60 others,including four men,had to be hospitalized after exposure to toxic gas . Tamil Nadu government has confirmed deaths of these two women.
But what is making situation even more worrying is what police sources are saying . They have suggested death toll could potentially rise,and there are unverified accounts indicating that as many as seven individuals may have perished in incident. Nothing confirmed beyond two deaths by government,but still,this uncertainty itself is scary .
And tbh,ammonia leak is not small thing ah . One mistake inside such industrial setup can hit dozens of workers within minutes,especially if safety systems or evacuation response are not strong enough.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) sent specialized team to site for rescue operations . Team had 30 personnel equipped to handle chemical,biological, radiological, and nuclear emergencies,which shows how serious authorities considered this leak.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Tamil Nadu government has announced ₹2 lakh to each family of deceased workers .
- Officials from various departments have been asked to investigate cause of ammonia leak .
- NDRF rescue operations and medical support for affected workers are underway .
Chief Minister Vijay expressed profound sorrow over tragedy and gave condolences to bereaved families . He also announced ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to each family of deceased workers,and said government will cover transportation costs for bodies back to their native states.
He has directed that all injured workers receive specialized medical treatment . Compensation for deceased and injured workers will be given under Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Scheme and Employees' Compensation Act . Preliminary report is expected within 24 hours,and detailed report within three days .
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also expressed condolences,especially as many affected workers were from Assam,Odisha,and Jharkhand . Critically injured people have been shifted to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for urgent care.
Now Chief Minister has also ordered inspections of hazardous industries across Tamil Nadu,and local officials including Information Technology Minister and Tiruvallur Collector have been sent to oversee relief work . But bigger question is still hanging there… how many such factories are actually safe before tragedy happens?
