This farmer loan waiver demand from Sowmiya Anbumani feels very relevant right now, because when weather threat and debt pressure come together, farmers are usually first people to suffer . And this time she has directly asked Tamil Nadu government to consider waiving loans taken by farmers from primary agricultural credit societies.
She raised this during debate on Motion of Thanks to Governor’s Address, while speaking as representative of Dharmapuri constituency . Main point was simple but heavy: farmers are already under financial stress, and expected "super" El Niño can make situation much worse.
And honestly, this is not some small warning ah . If adverse weather hits agriculture badly, then it is not just farmer income issue,it becomes food security issue also for state .
She said it clearly during her address: "Farmers are already struggling; we cannot let them drown under the weight of debt during such critical times," . That line pretty much shows why she is pushing loan waiver at this moment only.
Few things she focused on:
- Loan waivers for farmers from primary agricultural credit societies amid "super" El Niño concerns .
- Stricter punishments for sexual offenders and crimes against women and children.
- Implementation of Dharmapuri Cauvery Surplus Water Scheme for better irrigation support.
But her speech was not only about farmers. Sowmiya Anbumani also spoke about women’s safety, and called for harsher punishments for sexual offenders . In many places, this fear around safety of women and children is not abstract issue,it is daily concern for families .
Then came water issue, which is obviously very sensitive for Dharmapuri . PMK leader pushed for implementing Dharmapuri Cauvery Surplus Water Scheme, saying it can help improve irrigation facilities for local farmers.
And tbh, that part connects back to same farming problem again . Loan waiver may give some immediate breathing space, but without proper water supply, farmers will keep facing same crisis again and again .
At same time, government has to decide how much financial relief it can actually give and how quickly water schemes can move from speeches to ground work . Farmers are waiting, women’s safety questions are still there, and weather threat is also hanging over everything…
