Key Takeaways

  • New waste management rules mandate four-stream segregation
  • Ward committees to oversee local waste management
  • Awareness campaigns are crucial for public participation

Tiruchi City Corporation’s main office saw awareness meeting on Solid Waste Management Rules,2026 on June 22,and main point was simple: waste can’t be dumped mixed like before.

These new rules are replacing earlier 2016 guidelines . Officials explained that waste now has to be separated at source into four streams: biodegradable,recyclable,non-recyclable,and sanitary waste. Sounds basic, but in real life, this is where many homes and shops still fail .

Wet waste means kitchen scraps and food waste, and that has to go for composting . Dry waste like plastics, paper, metals, and glass has to be sent to Material Recovery Facilities for recycling. If this actually happens properly, garbage load can reduce a lot.

But sanitary waste is also being treated separately now, including used diapers and sanitary pads . Then there is special-care waste also, covering hazardous items like paint cans and medical waste . Not small thing ah,because mixing these with normal waste creates bigger health and environmental mess .

Few things standing out from this meeting:

  • Waste segregation is now required in four streams for better processing .
  • Ward-level committees will monitor waste management work in their areas.
  • Awareness campaigns and public participation are being pushed strongly.

Officials also spoke about ward-level committees and their role in daily waste handling . These committees are supposed to monitor source segregation, help with door-to-door collection, and check whether micro composting centers and other waste infrastructure are working properly.

And this part matters because rules on paper are one thing, but actual compliance depends on streets, homes, shops and apartments . If residents don’t separate waste properly, even best system becomes confused from first step itself.

Mayor M. Anbazhagan,Corporation Commissioner Veer Pratap Singh and Deputy Mayor G. Divya attended meeting too . Guidelines issued by Municipal Administration Department were also discussed, especially need for resident welfare associations, traders, and educational institutions to work together.

Tbh,this whole thing comes down to public habit only . Officials can hold meetings, committees can be formed, but will people actually keep biodegradable,recyclable,non-recyclable,and sanitary waste separate every single day…
