This Sikkim story is honestly very refreshing to read,especially when most environment news these days feels heavy only . Sirisay-Thampong village in Sikkim's Namchi district has achieved 100% native orchid coverage on June 21, 2026,and that is not small thing ah.
And what makes it better is that this was not some big outside project coming and going . It was community-driven,led by local youth and guided by renowned expert Pramod Rai . That kind of local ownership usually makes difference because people are not just watching,they are actually protecting.
Project covered all 75 households in village,with native orchid species mounted on tree trunks . Basically,every home became part of conservation drive in some way,and that image itself feels quite beautiful.
A team of 17 volunteers worked to identify suitable host trees and plant total 630 orchid seedlings . These seedlings included 29 species,with names like Dendrobium nobile,the state flower of Sikkim,Dendrobium aphyllum var . alba and Vanda pumila .
Few things standing out clearly here:

The initiative was inaugurated in presence of local ward leader Yoshnita Yangma,who has been supporting these conservation efforts . Household members were also encouraged to protect both host trees and newly planted orchids,which is important because orchids cannot survive if trees are ignored .
Since conservation efforts started in 2021,the survival rate of planted orchids has remained strong at approximately 75% . For nature-related work,that sounds like result of patience and follow-up,not just planting and taking photos.
And with Sikkim being home to over 532 orchid species,this kind of effort matters even more because rapid developmental activities are already putting pressure on biodiversity . Local orchid enthusiasts are right when they say trees and epiphytic orchids both need protection,because one depends on other.
But bigger question is whether more villages will get same kind of local energy,expert guidance and long-term care . Planting is one part,keeping it alive year after year is real test…
