Pune water issue is honestly becoming everyday headache now, especially for people living in newly merged areas . And when tanker dependency becomes normal thing, that is not small issue ah .
Now one effort has started in Undri-Mohammedwadi region around old Autadewadi Lake, and this actually feels like something people should watch closely . Because instead of just complaining about shortage, local residents are trying to revive one neglected water body in scientific way.
Ward No. 41 Corporator Nivrutti Anna Bandal, water conservation expert Retd. Lt Col Satish Hange and local residents are working on this restoration plan . Aim is simple but big: make Autadewadi Lake useful again for groundwater recharge, biodiversity and flood control during monsoon .
And tbh, this is where project sounds practical, not just decorative . Plan includes scientific desilting so lake can get back original storage capacity, removal of encroachments and accumulated waste, and building recharge trenches plus percolation pits.
Few things standing out clearly in this project:
- Scientific revival of Autadewadi Lake — aimed at improving local water security
- Community involvement essential — local residents participate in stewardship programs
- Long-term ecological benefits — enhances biodiversity and creates green spaces
But this is not just about storing water only . Project also talks about wetlands for natural water purification, planting thousands of native tree species around lake, and treated water inflow systems so water levels can be maintained through year .
There are also plans for biodiversity zones for birds and aquatic life, walking tracks, seating areas and spaces for environmental education . That part matters because once people start using place respectfully, they also start protecting it more seriously.
Experts involved believe revived Autadewadi Lake could improve groundwater levels in surrounding areas and reduce community's dependence on tanker water . If that actually happens,it can become good example for lake conservation across Pune district.
Corporator Nivrutti Anna Bandal said,“Autadewadi Lake is not merely water body but a vital natural asset for future generations.” And honestly, that line hits because Pune has already lost too many natural spaces to careless growth .
And now real question is whether this project will be maintained properly after initial excitement fades . Because restoring lake is one big step, but keeping it alive for years is different challenge altogether…
