Karnataka Tourism Department wants international cruise tourists to stay longer at New Mangalore Port, and if this actually works, local shops, hotels, drivers, water sports people, everyone could feel some benefit.
Right now, international cruise ships docking at New Mangalore Port are limited to just 12 hours . Department now wants to stretch that to as much as 48 hours, which is not small change . More time means tourists can actually go around instead of rushing back like airport layover only .
Thrilok Chandra K.V.,Secretary of the Department of Tourism, has said they are talking with international cruise operators for longer stays . Basic idea is simple:if people stay more, they spend more, and local employment also gets push .
But situation is not all rosy. Before COVID-19 pandemic, the port used to get around 24 international cruises annually . Now that number has fallen to just six to seven cruises per year. That drop itself shows why department is trying to revive this sector seriously rn .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Tourism season runs from October to May,and this year, approximately 2,500 tourists arrived on seven different cruises.
- Tourist spending averages between $500 to $1,000,which becomes good revenue for local businesses.
- No casinos being promoted,as department says it respects local sentiments against casinos and wants focus on natural attractions.
And this casino point matters, because in coastal Karnataka these things can become sensitive very fast . Department seems to be saying clearly that Mangaluru cruise tourism should be about beaches, temples and local experiences, not controversy .
Chandra also pointed out that Mangaluru is close to tourist hotspots, including beaches and temples in Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts . That actually makes sense, because if docking time becomes 48 hours, visitors can go beyond port area and still return comfortably .
New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) officials are also open to longer docking times,as port has enough infrastructure to handle more traffic without scheduling conflicts . Along with Karnataka Tourism Society-Mangaluru Chapter, department plans to study cruise tourism in Kochi and Mumbai, and findings are expected to guide new strategies by November.
These planned cruise tourism packages may include five-star hotel accommodations, temple visits and beach activities . Sounds nice, but ground reality also has to match brochure talk . Local resident Yajnesh Karkera, who is involved in water sports, has already pointed out need to improve infrastructure at beaches like Malpe and Panambur.
At Malpe beach, space is currently limited because fishing vessels occupy harbor area . Karkera has urged department to create suitable facilities and safety measures so incoming cruises do not face messy experience. And honestly, that is where real test begins… because getting ships to stay for 48 hours is one thing, but making coast ready for them is another story altogether…
