Residents of Ward 27 are talking about contamination of Sathram Teppakulam, which has been major water source for their area.
And what makes it worse is that people are saying sewage is entering tank because of soil erosion . For any locality, losing clean water source like this is not small thing ah,especially when residents remember same tank as once being clean and useful for drinking water.
Sathram Teppakulam has apparently been one of important water bodies for that community for long time . Many locals are now upset because sewage pollution has started affecting tank badly over past few weeks.
R.P. Gopinath, head of BJP’s environmental protection cell, said tank is one of last remaining natural water bodies in area, along with temple pond at Sugavaneswarar temple . That point matters because this is not only about people using water, but also about whole local ecosystem .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Residents are reporting increasing sewage contamination in Sathram Teppakulam .
- Soil erosion has damaged sidewalls and caused part of tank sidewall to collapse.
- Officials from Sooramangalam zone said remedial works will commence on Monday.
And tbh, this is where frustration of residents makes complete sense . If sewage is entering drinking water source, waiting too long can make problem much bigger than just repair work .
Residents like R. Srinivasan have said situation has worsened seriously, with sewage entering tank in recent weeks due to increased soil erosion . Once sidewalls are damaged like this, contamination becomes almost direct and that is scary for families living nearby .
Corporation officials have now said they will start work to stop further soil erosion and reconstruct damaged sidewall of tank . Good that action has been promised, but people will obviously watch whether work actually begins properly on Monday.
But bigger question is why such water bodies are allowed to reach this stage before everyone starts reacting . Fish, tortoises, drinking water memories, local dependence… all of it is sitting inside one polluted tank now,and residents are left waiting to see what happens next…
