Prime Minister Narendra Modi talking about mangoes on May 31 is not some random seasonal mention, because in India, mango is emotion only .
During recent episode of his monthly radio program,Mann Ki Baat,Modi took time to speak about India's many mango varieties and farmers behind them . He said,"As summer arrives, mangoes become hallmark of conversation in homes across India," and honestly, that line is very true for most families .
Because once summer starts, discussion slowly becomes Hapus,Kesar,Dussehri, price, quality, which market, which box… all same cycle every year . And still nobody gets bored of it.
Modi mentioned Maharashtra's Hapus,Gujarat's Kesar, and Uttar Pradesh's Dussehri while talking about how different regions have their own mango identity . He also highlighted Langra mango, which stays green even when ripe, which is actually one of those small details many people love explaining at home .
He said,"Each mango variety carries its own flavor and aroma, representing the soul of its region." And tbh, this is where mango becomes more than fruit . It becomes memory, place, family habit and local pride.
Few things standing out clearly from his remarks:
- India has mango varieties like Hapus,Kesar, and Dussehri.
- Indian mangoes are now reaching international markets.
- Farmers are being credited for strengthening agricultural economy.
Modi also spoke about global demand and said,"This journey of the mango is now reaching the global market from village." That village-to-world journey sounds simple when said like this, but farmers know how much work goes behind every crop, season and shipment .
He thanked mango farmers and told them,"You are not just ordinary farmers; you are exceptional contributors to our agricultural economy," which will probably feel encouraging for many growers who rarely get this kind of direct mention on national platform .
But at same time,it also reminds us how much depends on these farmers every summer . Weather, market prices, transport, exports, local demand… one fruit carries so many stories behind it,and most of us only see final mango on dining table…
