Mumbai T20 League is going into very interesting season now,and honestly, this one feels different because women's edition is finally being added along with already established men's league . Not small thing ah,especially in Mumbai cricket setup where so many talented girls are still waiting for proper visibility .
This season will bring three women's teams into competition, and that itself changes whole mood around league . For years,we keep hearing about equal chances in cricket, but actual platforms matter more than speeches only.
Rajdip Gupta ,Chairman of Governing Council, said he was excited about this initiative and also shared that this was first task given to him after taking office . His line,"Why should only boys have all the fun?" actually sums up feeling quite well.
And tbh, that question hits because women's cricket has grown so much, but local-level chances are still not same everywhere . Gupta spoke about how female cricketers often get sidelined, and idea here is to give them proper visibility platform.
Few things standing out clearly in this move:
- Three women's teams are being added to Mumbai T20 League.
- Women's league has purse of ₹50 lakh for women players.
- League can act as feeder system for WPL and maybe Indian national team .
Gupta also spoke about players like Jemimah Rodrigues ,who played a key role in India's victory at 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup . That example makes sense because when players get stage, match pressure and support, they can actually move toward bigger cricket like WPL and national side.
Money side is also not being ignored here . Mumbai Cricket Association has committed ₹50 lakh purse for women's league, and for many players, this kind of financial support can make real difference . Training, travel, gear, family pressure… all these things are not imaginary issues.
At same time, men's and women's players being treated equally is still long journey, but this feels like one practical step . Gupta said whole structure is meant to support financial sustainability for both men’s and women’s players, and if it works properly,it can build healthier cricket environment in Mumbai.
As season comes closer, players and fans will obviously be watching closely . Gupta also told aspiring cricketers,"Chance SoduNako" (Don't miss chance),and that line feels almost like message to every girl who has been waiting outside system for long time…
But now real question is,will this platform actually keep growing after first excitement fades?
