This Sambalpur incident is honestly disturbing on many levels . Vishnu S.,a daily wage laborer from Kerala, was reportedly brutally assaulted by mob in Odisha just because people could not understand him and assumed worst.
And that is scary ah,because one language gap,one rumour, one wrong suspicion… and suddenly person becomes target.
As per reports,Vishnu S. was wandering near Dhobapada Park in Sambalpur when locals started suspecting him of being child-lifter . Main issue was that he could not communicate in local language properly,so instead of helping or informing police, people allegedly turned violent.
This is not small thing . A man from another state, already unable to explain himself, gets trapped in public suspicion like this. And in mob situation, nobody waits for truth only.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Vishnu S.,a daily wage laborer from Kerala, was assaulted in Sambalpur,Odisha after being mistaken for child-lifter .
- Just days earlier, two NGO workers were attacked in Rayagada district under similar suspicion.
- Police said over 100 villagers participated in earlier attack, and 25 individuals have been arrested.
And this is where whole pattern becomes more worrying . These are not random one-off fights. Reports say rumours of child abduction have been triggering public lynching and assaults in different parts of Odisha.
In Rayagada district, two NGO workers were severely injured after villagers attacked them under similar circumstances . That case has now been assigned to an Additional DGP-level officer to speed up investigation. Police response may be fast after violence happens, but question is why people are reaching that point so quickly.
There is also February case where mentally challenged man was beaten to death under similar suspicions, and 15 individuals were arrested . Other such attacks have also been reported from districts like Mayurbhanj and Balasore.
Tbh,this whole thing shows how dangerous mistrust has become inside communities . One rumour about child abduction spreads, and suddenly normal people start behaving like law, court and punishment all in one.
And if people keep believing WhatsApp-type fears more than police process, then any outsider, any poor person, any mentally unwell person, anyone who cannot explain properly can become next victim…
So question is,how many more such incidents will it take before communities actually stop and think before raising hand?
