This Sonarpur incident has now turned into full political firestorm, and honestly,it looks very ugly from outside . Mamata Banerjee, the leader of Trinamool Congress and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, has openly hit out at BJP after alleged attack on her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
Incident reportedly happened in Sonarpur, located in South 24 Parganas district, where Abhishek Banerjee was assaulted while trying to support grieving family . That detail itself makes whole thing more uncomfortable, because this was not just some rally clash or stage fight.
Mamata Banerjee shared video of assault in strongly worded social media post and wrote,“RULERS BECAME KILLERS – shame on you BJP,” . She clearly blamed BJP and said present state government is creating atmosphere where such violence can happen.
And tbh, this is where political fight starts looking less like democracy and more like street-level intimidation . According to her post, despite brutal attack by BJP-affiliated individuals,Abhishek still remained committed to helping family of Sanju Karmakar, who had recently suffered tragedy .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked in Sonarpur while supporting grieving family.
- Mamata Banerjee accused BJP directly and shared video of assault.
- Leaders are now demanding better security for opposition figures .
Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned attack and pointed to inadequate police protection for opposition leaders . Akhilesh Yadav too denounced incident, calling it sign of BJP's negative political strategy.
Now political leaders are urging both West Bengal and Union Governments to ensure safety of opposition figures . And honestly, this is not small thing ah,because once leaders start getting attacked while visiting families, common workers on ground will feel even more exposed .
Attack has again raised questions about safety and security of political figures in West Bengal, especially those from opposition parties . Mamata Banerjee and others are asking law enforcement to act immediately so such incidents do not keep repeating.
But at same time, party tensions in state are already running high . Trinamool Congress is expected to intensify its campaign against BJP and frame this as larger story of political oppression.
And if opposition parties nationally start rallying around this issue,it may not stay limited to West Bengal only . Question is,whether this becomes turning point or just another violent episode everyone argues over for few days…
