This Sonarpur incident feels seriously ugly, because Abhishek Banerjee was not even there for rally or big political show . He had gone to meet family of deceased party worker, and still situation turned into assault, heckling and hospital visit.
On May 30,Abhishek Banerjee,General Secretary of Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha member, was admitted to private hospital in Kolkata after attack in Sonarpur, located in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal . Reports say this happened during his visit to meet family of party worker who died in post-election violence.
And honestly, politics in West Bengal already feels heated most of time, but this kind of physical attack makes everything more disturbing . Local protesters reportedly surrounded him, heckled him and then things became violent.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Abhishek Banerjee was attacked while meeting family of a slain party worker.
- Women protesters physically assaulted him and hurled objects, including eggs .
- Mamata Banerjee condemned attack and accused BJP .
During visit, local women protesters allegedly physically assaulted him and threw eggs at him . Situation got so bad that he had to wear cricket helmet for protection, which itself says lot about how hostile crowd had become . Still,he reportedly managed to meet grieving family before police escorted him out.
But even while leaving, protesters lined streets, raised slogans and called him “thief.” That part is not small thing ah,because once political anger reaches level where mob is throwing things and shouting like this, anything can happen in seconds.
After he was taken back to Kolkata for medical attention,Abhishek Banerjee was seen arriving at hospital in wheelchair . His aunt,Mamata Banerjee, who is also former Chief Minister of West Bengal, rushed there after hearing about incident . Abhishek’s mother,Lata Banerjee, also came with her .
Other Trinamool Congress leaders like Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and Chandrima Bhattacharya also reached hospital to show support . At same time,Mamata Banerjee posted on social media and directly blamed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and state government for attack on her nephew.
Tbh,this whole thing again shows how political fights in West Bengal are not staying limited to speeches and accusations anymore . When visit to mourning family turns into attack, then question is what happens next time someone steps into already angry area…
