This Mahua Moitra controversy is becoming proper messy now,and honestly,it feels like one of those political fights where every sentence can turn into court case . TMC already seems to be dealing with internal storm, and now twenty rebel MPs are reportedly preparing defamation lawsuit against her .
Mahua Moitra,a Member of Parliament from Trinamool Congress (TMC),has claimed that MPs who defected were offered ₹40 crore . As per reports, she alleged there was upfront payment of ₹4 crore and then ₹1 crore monthly for 36 months . Not small allegation ah.
And this whole thing apparently started after Sanjay Raut,a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT),said Maharashtra MPs were being offered ₹15 crore each to switch sides . Moitra then hit back with that sharp line,"Only ₹15 crore? Why are they selling themselves so cheaply?"
That one statement seems to have angered rebel side badly . Because now twenty rebel MPs from her own party have decided to take legal route, and defamation lawsuit is being talked about .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Twenty out of its twenty-eight Lok Sabha MPs have broken away to form separate faction.
- TMC's strength in Lok Sabha has gone from twenty-eight MPs to just eight.
- TMC,formed in 1998,is now facing one of its most severe crises.
And tbh, this is not just normal party disagreement anymore . When own MPs are breaking away and then threatening legal action against senior leader,it shows how deep bitterness has gone inside party .
The rebellion is being led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the Chief Whip, who has been vocal about faction's grievances . That detail matters because this is not some random outside attack, this is coming from inside TMC only .
At same time, these bribery claims raise uncomfortable questions about political switching in India . People already suspect money power behind many defections, and when numbers like ₹40 crore,₹4 crore,₹1 crore monthly and 36 months are being openly thrown around,it naturally creates more doubt.
But court fight is one side, political damage is another . TMC has always projected itself as strong grassroots party in West Bengal and beyond, but going from twenty-eight MPs to eight in Lok Sabha is serious blow .
And now question is,can party repair trust after such open split,or will this legal fight make cracks even wider…
