Rajasthan's Agriculture Minister Kirodi Lal Meena initiated a significant crackdown on illegal seed factories operating in the RIICO Industrial Area of Chomu, located near Jaipur. On May 26, 2026, the minister conducted an unannounced inspection that exposed a large-scale counterfeit seed operation. The inspection led to the discovery of two unauthorized units where substandard groundnut seeds were being repackaged under the guise of a reputable Sikar-based company's branding.
During the raid, officials uncovered alarming evidence of a well-organized counterfeit production system. They seized nearly 6 million empty sacks and packaging materials bearing the labels of recognized seed companies. Furthermore, around 200,000 sacks of raw groundnuts, sourced cheaply from the open market, were found on site. The presence of industrial machinery designed for shelling peanuts and packing them into branded bags underscored the extent of the illegal operations.
- Contaminated seeds pose health risks — The seized groundnuts were found to be contaminated with aflatoxin, a toxic fungus that can lead to severe health issues, including liver damage and cancer.
- Public health concerns arise — The contamination renders the seized stock unfit for agricultural use or human consumption, raising alarms about public safety.
- Impact on farmers' trust — These illegal activities have damaged farmers’ confidence in certified seed varieties and tarnished Rajasthan’s agricultural reputation on the global stage.
Experts have warned that using contaminated seeds could result in serious crop failures, which would have dire consequences for farmers. Minister Meena expressed grave concern over the implications of such illegal activities, stating that they have eroded farmers' trust in certified seed varieties and adversely affected the state's agricultural reputation internationally. He noted that Rajasthan's groundnut exports, once robust, have faced restrictions due to quality concerns arising from contamination.
The operation not only cheats farmers by selling counterfeit seeds at inflated prices but also jeopardizes soil health and overall crop productivity. Authorities are now intensifying investigations to understand the full scale of this counterfeit seed network and trace the supply chains involved. The state government has pledged to take stringent action against all parties implicated in the counterfeit seed trade, aiming to restore integrity and trust in the agricultural system of Rajasthan.
