Finally some good news coming for kids with Type 1 diabetes in Kerala . Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced some big reforms to Mittayi scheme during the Assembly session on June 19, 2026 .
This scheme was actually started by previous LDF government, and was supposed to give support and treatment through special Mittayi clinics . But tbh,its implementation has been very shaky .
Now the government is promising to fix things . They are talking about preventing fund diversion and making sure services from 56 endocrinologists are actually available in satellite centers everywhere.
And new promises sound really good ah . They are committed to supplying quality insulin to children, and even providing insulin pumps for those with brittle diabetes and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors for kids facing critical health issues.
They also want to support local manufacturing of these insulin pumps . This is very smart idea only, because it could really bring down the costs and make it easier for families to get them .
But here is where reality hits hard . The scheme has been around since 2018,but right now only about 2,500 of estimated 6,000 children with Type 1 diabetes are getting any benefit from it . That's less than half.
Parents have been saying for long time that insulin supplies in government hospitals are not enough, forcing them to go to private hospitals and spend so much money . You can imagine stress .
Few things standing out in this new announcement:
- Quality insulin supply finally promised to all children under scheme.
- Support for local insulin pump production to make them more affordable.
- Increased presence of endocrinologists for specialized care across Kerala.
Advocacy groups like the Type One Diabetes Foundation and the Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society Kerala have been raising these issues constantly . They are cautiously optimistic about these reforms, which is understandable.
They hope these changes will solve the immediate problems and also create proper system for long-term support . promises are great, but everything depends on actual work on the ground… will things finally change for these families…
