Minimum fine has now been doubled from ₹250 to ₹500,and that is not small change ah for daily movement also .
This new rule took effect on June 19,2026 . It comes under revised provisions of Railways Act, 1989 and was announced by Ministry of Railways because fare evasion has been continuing as regular headache for system.
Basically,if someone is caught travelling without ticket,minimum penalty is now ₹500 . Earlier ₹250 fine had been unchanged for several years,so railway administration clearly felt people were not taking it seriously anymore .
And tbh,they may have point here . In crowded trains,genuine passengers are already struggling for space,seat and basic comfort . Then ticketless travel adds more pressure on same system only.
Few things standing out in this change:
- Minimum penalty for ticketless travel increased from ₹250 to ₹500 .
- Other violations like trespassing and unauthorized hawking will also face enhanced fines .
- Railway authorities say focus is on passenger safety,discipline and better order inside railway premises.
This has also been linked with Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026 . Officials from Ratlam Railway Division said these changes are meant to discourage irregular and ticketless travel,and make people follow rules more seriously.
But at same time,question is also about enforcement . Fine increasing on paper is one thing,but checking should be fair and consistent too . Otherwise regular passengers may still feel nothing much changes on ground.
Indian Railways believes stricter penalties will help improve facilities for genuine passengers and create more responsible travel culture . Sounds good,but real test will be inside local trains,platforms and long-route compartments where crowd pressure is already too much .
And now everyone will watch whether ₹500 fine actually changes behaviour,or people simply find new ways around system…
