Minister for Labour, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Bindhu Krishna told Kerala Legislative Assembly on June 22,2026 that consultations will happen before final call is taken.
She said government wants to speak with trade unions, legal experts and employers before deciding its position on Centre’s Labour Codes . And honestly, this sounds like bare minimum when rules are going to affect workers directly.
Bindhu Krishna also clarified that Kerala government has not yet finalized its stance on rules to be framed under Labour Codes . So rn,it is still discussion stage, not final decision stage.
Another major part here is expert committee led by V. Gopala Gowda , former judge of Supreme Court . Government will review recommendations given by this committee before moving ahead .
Few things standing out clearly in this issue:
- Bindhu Krishna said consultations with trade unions, legal experts and employers will happen before final decision .
- Recommendations from committee led by V . Gopala Gowda will guide government’s approach.
- N.K. Akbar raised concerns that Labour Codes could hurt workers’ rights.
And tbh,N.K. Akbar’s concern is not random only . During assembly session,he again pointed out that Labour Codes may undermine workers’ rights and asked government to continue policies of previous Left Democratic Front administration.
He also referred to reservations earlier raised about “worker-unfriendly” parts of new Codes . That phrase itself shows where tension is coming from, especially in state like Kerala where labour politics has always been strong ah.
But at same time, government is trying to keep door open for all sides . Workers, unions, employers, legal experts… everyone’s view is supposed to be heard before Kerala takes clear position.
And that is where whole issue becomes tricky . Reform is one side, worker protection is another side, and between both, actual working people are waiting to see what changes in their daily life…
