On paper,Essentiality Certificate for Asramam ESI Model and Super Speciality Hospital in Kollam is big step,but actual classes starting is still not simple.
Kerala government has issued Essentiality Certificate for upgrading hospital into full medical college . Plan is to admit 50 MBBS students for 2026–2027 academic year,and that part will definitely matter for students in region .
Announcement came from N.K. Premachandran,Member of Parliament . He sounded hopeful about future of medical education there,but at same time he also went after previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government pretty sharply.
His allegation is that earlier administration delayed certificate processing till last moment . According to him,this created unnecessary administrative mess and made it harder to move file before National Medical Commission (NMC) submission deadline.
Few things standing out here:
- Essentiality Certificate has been granted for Asramam ESI Model and Super Speciality Hospital in Kollam .
- 50 MBBS students are planned for 2026–2027 academic year .
- Affiliation from Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is still required.
And this is where excitement gets little stuck . Because Essentiality Certificate alone is not enough ah. Hospital still needs official affiliation from Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS),and without that,NMC application cannot move properly.
Problem is,standard deadline for new medical college applications has already passed . So even after getting certificate,timeline is complicated. Premachandran has said alternative solutions or extensions need to be discussed during ESI board meeting scheduled for later this month.
Current government is saying efforts will be made to speed up remaining steps and explore whatever route is possible so classes can begin this year . But when deadlines,university affiliation,NMC process and old delays all come together,nothing feels fully settled rn.
And for students waiting in Kerala,this must be frustrating only… certificate is there,hope is there,but final green signal is still hanging somewhere between files and meetings…
