So Kerala government is finally getting serious about our roads ah . Saw the news about new budget from Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and the amount is huge .
On June 19,2026,he announced total budget of ₹5,952.29 crore just for Public Works Department (PWD) . The main goal is to improve the road network across state.
They are planning to make whole new ‘Road Architecture Wing’ which will focus on upgrading roadways, bypasses and junctions . They are even changing the old PWD manual to make things happen faster.
And honestly, this is where things get interesting.
The plan is to upgrade all public works roads to Bituminous Macadam (BM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC) standard in next five years . This is supposed to make them much more durable. Good if it happens.
Few big projects got special mention:
- Immediate start for Vizhinjam-Navaikulam Outer Ring Road to connect with Vizhinjam Terminal.
- Construction of Punchakolli bridge which will help local tribal community in Punchakolli-Alakkal .
- Work on Kottayam skywalk will finally start again for pedestrian safety .
But the most modern-sounding thing is this new road inspection system . They are saying it will use AI technology, like they have in some other countries . This is for improving road safety and maintenance .
And it’s not just big cities . They also mentioned funding for other local projects like the elevated highway from Kohinoor to Kozhikode Airport and ring road project in Pathanapuram .
Good roads are not small thing ah . It affects daily travel, business, everything. So this investment is much needed.
But big promises are always made during budget announcements . The real test is always implementation on ground level . Will all this money be used properly and will projects finish on time… that is what everyone is thinking now…
