On May 26, 2026, BJP MLAs in Kerala formally requested Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the controversial Sabarimala gold scam. This demand is accompanied by a call for the unconditional withdrawal of all cases registered against devotees who participated in the protests during the Sabarimala agitation. The issue has garnered significant attention, especially given the allegations surrounding former Devaswom Board officials and the need for accountability.
BJP MLA V. Muraleedharan expressed frustration over the government's inaction, noting that Satheesan had previously advocated for a CBI investigation while serving as the Opposition Leader. The BJP leaders contend that the delay in addressing this serious matter is unjustifiable, especially since the case involves multiple high-profile individuals and alleged conspiracies.
- Demand for CBI investigation — BJP MLAs stress the need for an impartial inquiry into the scam.
- Withdrawal of cases against devotees — Urging the government to drop all charges related to the protests.
- Allegations against high-profile individuals — Calls for accountability regarding former Devaswom Board officials.
The BJP's letter highlighted the involvement of various individuals, including the prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, and alleged connections to prominent political figures, including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The letter also mentioned the need to investigate the international links previously flagged by the High Court.
In total, approximately 29,119 individuals have been implicated in 2,624 cases registered across Kerala related to the protests. However, the government has reportedly considered withdrawing only 1,047 non-serious cases, which the BJP leaders argue is a politically motivated distinction made by the previous government.
The BJP MLAs warned that unless all cases are withdrawn unconditionally, there could be a perception that the Congress party's previous promises were merely political rhetoric lacking genuine intent. This situation remains a flashpoint in Kerala's political landscape, reflecting broader tensions around religious practices and political accountability.
