Finally,it looks like Karnataka is shifting its approach to suicide prevention . Instead of just waiting for people to show up at hospital, they are going into communities and honestly, this feels like a much-needed change.
And one story really shows why this is so important . A 28-year-old garment factory worker, overwhelmed by ₹5,000 debt and family pressure, attempted self-harm. Just ₹5,000. It highlights how financial stress and feeling alone can push someone to the edge.
But this is where new initiative,Project SURAKSHA,came in . It's led by NIMHANS with government support. Through this program, she got counseling,follow-up calls, and her family was also involved. This kind of support is exactly what people need.
And this is the main point ah. Suicide is almost never because of one single incident . It's usually a long build-up of emotional pain and social isolation that people don't know how to handle .
This whole community-based idea makes so much sense. When you involve local leaders and even schoolteachers,it helps reduce that stigma around asking for help . Dr. Prabha S. Chandra, the NIMHANS director, also emphasized this point about community involvement .
Some key things about this approach:
- Community engagement is key — Involving local people helps encourage others to seek help without shame.
- Evidence-based interventions — They are using psychological support in emergencies and then doing regular check-ins,which helps reduce repeat attempts.
- Scalable models for the future — If Project SURAKSHA works well,it could be used all over India.
But the numbers are still very scary. According to National Crime Records Bureau,Karnataka saw 13,151 suicide deaths in 2024 . That is huge number. Bengaluru city is also mentioned for having a high suicide rate compared to other big cities.
And tbh, that's not even the full picture. Urban Self-Harm Study (USHAS) recorded over 32,712 cases of self-harm in state between 2022 and May 2026 . That shows how many more people are struggling silently.
This SURAKSHA project is a good start,a really good one actually . But the scale of this problem is just massive. It makes you wonder how many people are still out there, feeling completely alone with their thoughts…
