Key Takeaways

  • Karachi faces acute water crisis due to power failures
  • Residents struggle with rising tanker water prices
  • Protests demand immediate restoration of water supply

Just saw this news coming from Karachi and honestly, the situation there seems like a complete nightmare rn. Power cuts are one thing, but now it's leading to massive water shortages for three straight days.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is apparently blaming K-Electric,saying faults in their main supply cable are causing all this disruption . And numbers are just crazy,a shortfall of 85 million gallons per day (MGD) . I can't even imagine what people are going through in this heat.

Things really went bad on May 30 . K-Electric did some forced shutdown at Dhabeji Grid for repairs, and that knocked out ten of the twenty-one pumping units at Dhabeji Pumping Station . Just like that, water supply to so many areas just stopped.

And it didn't end there . After that, the North East Karachi Water Pumping Station also had outages, which then affected K-II Pumping Station's operations . It's like one problem causing another and another.

And honestly, this is where things get really tough for ordinary families.

People are now forced to buy water from tankers, but even that is not easy . Reports say many have to wait up to ten days for a tanker to even arrive . And with everyone desperate, the prices for these tankers have doubled . This is pure helplessness.

Few things standing out clearly in this situation:

  • Power supply disruptions from K-Electric faults are being blamed for halting water pumping .
  • Residents are forced to buy expensive water tankers and face waiting times of up to ten days.
  • MQM-P lawmakers have started protesting in Sindh Assembly, demanding immediate action .

Naturally, politicians are getting involved now . Lawmakers from Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) were protesting in Sindh Assembly, chanting slogans like "Give water to Karachi" . Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi said the city is "thirsty for every drop of water," and criticized authorities for not acting.

But then comes the usual blame game . Sindh's Law Minister,Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, pointed to the K-IV water supply project and told MQM-P to push the federal government to finish it faster . So,one party tells the other to do something…

And in middle of all this, the people of Karachi are suffering without basic water in this summer heat . It's same story again and again, infrastructure fails, authorities point fingers, and common person is left to struggle for something as basic as water…
