Japan has now announced a huge visa fee hike for foreigners,and honestly,this one will pinch many people planning to travel,study,work or settle there . Fivefold increase is not small thing ah,especially when it is coming after such long gap.
From July 1,2026,visa fees for foreigners will go up sharply . This is first adjustment in visa pricing since 1978,which means Japan basically kept same structure for nearly half century before suddenly making this big jump .
Under new fee structure,single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen ($18.69) to 15,000 yen . Multi-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen . For many tourists maybe this may still look manageable,but for families,students and frequent travellers,this adds up fast .
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said fee hikes are meant to reflect current economic conditions,especially weakening of Japanese yen . Yen has been declining since 2021 and is now at historic lows,so government is clearly trying to adjust old fee system with present economy .
And tbh,this is where mixed reaction will come . Japan is saying it does not expect immediate negative impact on inbound tourism,because last year country saw record 42.7 million international visitors . But at same time,higher fees always create some hesitation for budget travellers .
Few key changes standing out here:
- Single-entry visa fee increase — rising from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen .
- Multi-entry visa cost adjustment — now set at 30,000 yen from 6,000 yen.
- Permanent residency fee hike — applications now capped at 300,000 yen .
But visa is not only area where foreigners will pay more . Japan's Upper House recently enacted a bill raising other fees linked to foreign residency also . Cap for permanent residency applications will increase to 300,000 yen,from earlier limit of 10,000 yen . That is a massive jump,not just normal revision.
Even changing residency status or extending stay will become costlier,going up to 100,000 yen from 10,000 yen . Officials say this brings Japan closer to other G7 nations,but for people already living there,this can feel like sudden extra burden.
And honestly,this whole move shows Japan is trying to balance inflation,currency pressure and growing foreign inflow all together . Tourism may not drop immediately rn,but people who depend on longer stays or residency routes will definitely feel pressure.
Question is,whether this becomes just one-time correction after decades or start of more expensive entry system for foreigners in Japan…
