Some commemorations are not just formal events, and May 30 felt like that for Bangladesh . On 45th death anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman,India also paid tribute, and honestly, this again brings back whole history of how closely Bangladesh’s liberation story is tied with India .
Indian High Commission in Dhaka posted message on social media, remembering Rahman’s famous radio address from March 1971 . That address had inspired Bangladeshi people to resist oppression from Pakistani forces, and later became part of larger liberation memory for nation.
And their message was very direct: "As the people of Bangladesh gather today in memory of one of their nation’s bravest sons - Shaheed President Zia-ur-Rahman Bir Uttam - we recall his famous radio address of March 1971, which electrified masses, inspired them on a path of resistance against oppression and led to national liberation."
This kind of tribute is not small thing ah,because India and Bangladesh share history full of pain, sacrifice and political emotion . It is not just diplomacy on paper,it carries memory of war, refugees, resistance and victory .
Few things standing out from commemoration:
- Thousands, including leaders from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP),gathered at Zia Udyan in Dhaka .
- Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman paid homage to his father during commemorative events.
- PM Modi expressed India's eagerness to collaborate with Bangladesh on various fronts, with focus on mutual respect and friendship.
During events,Tarique Rahman paid tribute to his father, the late President Ziaur Rahman, and spoke about his leadership’s impact on Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty . For many in Bangladesh,Ziaur Rahman’s name still carries strong political and emotional weight .
And tbh,his assassination on May 30,1981 still feels like one of those events which never fully leaves country’s politics . Even after decades,it keeps coming back in public memory, party politics and national discussion.
Earlier,Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also extended Eid al-Adha greetings to Rahman and Bangladeshi people . He spoke about India’s readiness to improve bilateral cooperation across sectors, and also mentioned shared sacrifices and cultural ties between India and Bangladesh.
Rahman also responded with similar warmth, expressing hope that relations will keep growing on basis of goodwill and mutual respect . But with so much history, politics and emotion sitting between both countries, one always wonders how much of this goodwill can survive real pressure when difficult moments come…
