On May 28,2026,the Gujarat government directed all offices, institutions, universities, and corporations under state Agriculture Department to install solar rooftop systems.
Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani announced this after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal for citizens and government institutions to adopt greener practices and reduce fuel consumption . Decision was taken under guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who has been pushing transition toward renewable energy sources .
And this is not small thing ah,because government offices consume electricity every single day . If rooftops are sitting empty and Gujarat has enough sunlight, then using solar power there makes basic sense only.
Vaghani said installing solar rooftops in government offices will reduce dependence on electricity generated from conventional fuels and also encourage use of solar power, which is abundant and sustainable . Cost saving is also big part here,as he stated this initiative is expected to lower electricity costs for government offices while reinforcing Gujarat’s leadership in clean energy sector.
Few things standing out clearly in this decision:
- All offices, institutions, universities, and corporations under state Agriculture Department must begin solar rooftop installations without delay .
- Departments have to submit their plans to Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) within the next seven days.
- This step connects with national rooftop solar push, with more than 25 lakh rooftop solar systems reported installed across India by March 2026 .
But real test will be speed . Government orders are announced many times, but actual installation, maintenance, billing connection and follow-up decide whether public really sees impact or not.
This also fits into Prime Minister Modi's call for rooftop solar adoption to be pursued in “mission mode” across cities, public institutions and different sectors . In background, there are rising global uncertainties and pressures on fuel imports,so his earlier seven-point appeal focused on reducing petrol and diesel consumption, promoting public transport, and encouraging use of domestic products .
And tbh, solar rooftops in government buildings feel like low-hanging fruit . No land fight,no huge new structure needed, just use roof space already available and cut electricity bills slowly .
Still, question is how fast these departments will actually move after sending proposals to Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) . Seven days for plans sounds sharp, but execution on ground is where story usually gets interesting…
