Delhi traffic news always sounds big on paper,but this one from May 28 actually feels like Delhi government is trying to attack problem from many sides at once . Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced road and connectivity projects for making Delhi a world-class,congestion-free metropolis,and honestly,anyone who has been stuck near Dhaula Kuan or IGI Airport knows why people will listen .
And this is being planned with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari , so clearly it is not small repair-work type announcement . Government is talking about large-scale projects across Delhi-NCR,mainly to improve mobility and reduce daily choking on major routes.
Rekha Gupta said these projects are not only for immediate traffic relief,but also for future transportation demands . That part matters because Delhi traffic is not waiting for anyone ah,it keeps getting worse every year only .
Few big points standing out here:
- AIIMS-Mahipalpur-Gurugram Elevated Corridor is planned as six-lane,20-km project with estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore .
- Shiv Murti-Nelson Mandela Marg Tunnel is proposed as 8-km underground tunnel at cost of ₹7,000 crore .
- Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-II) extension and related corridors are being pushed to ease traffic near IGI Airport,Delhi-NCR and other busy routes.
The AIIMS-Mahipalpur-Gurugram Elevated Corridor is probably going to get most attention because Delhi-Gurugram travel is daily headache for lakhs of people . This signal-free connection is expected to reduce pressure on routes like Dhaula Kuan and Mehrauli-Gurugram Road,and if it actually works as promised,that stretch could finally breathe little.
But then comes Shiv Murti-Nelson Mandela Marg Tunnel,which sounds even more ambitious . This 8-km underground tunnel is meant to connect Dwarka Expressway side with Vasant Kunj,and ₹7,000 crore cost itself shows scale of work being imagined here .
Then Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-II) is also getting extension with nearly 17-km,six-lane corridor for ₹3,500 crore . This is supposed to link key areas and reduce mess around IGI Airport and other major roads. For people who travel airport side regularly,this is not some abstract planning thing,it is daily survival issue.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Connectivity Corridor is another big one,spanning approximately 65 km as six-lane corridor at cost of ₹7,500 crore . Rekha Gupta also discussed Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-II) Extension connecting Delhi-Dehradun Expressway with UER-II,so residents in Delhi,Gurugram and beyond may get better access if timelines hold .
And timelines are big question here tbh. Construction is expected to commence by December 2026 for these future traffic projects,while corridor linking Delhi-Amritsar-Katra route with UER-II is slated to start by March 2027 . That route is also expected to improve freight movement and reduce congestion across Delhi-NCR .
On paper,this whole plan looks huge and very needed . But Delhi has seen many big transport promises before,and real test will be execution,land issues,traffic diversions,costs and whether common commuters actually feel difference when work begins…
