  • 91 unauthorized colonies home to 5-6 lakh people
  • Next court hearing scheduled for July 25

The Delhi High Court has taken a firm stance against residential colonies in Zone ‘O’ of the Yamuna floodplains, deeming their existence as "completely impermissible." This decision comes as a response to a petition highlighting rampant illegal construction in this ecologically sensitive area, which is home to around 5 to 6 lakh people. Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora have directed the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to deliver a decisive response regarding the future of 91 unauthorized colonies by the next hearing date.

During the proceedings, the court noted that no new construction should be permitted in Zone ‘O’ as it poses significant risks to the environment and the riverbed area. The judges pointed out that despite prior warnings, illegal construction activities continue to proliferate in areas such as Jagatpur Village and Wazirabad Village, undermining previous directives. The court emphasized that a comprehensive strategy is necessary to address the ongoing issues in these colonies.

  • Urgent decision required — The Centre must decide the fate of 91 unauthorized colonies.
  • Illegal construction ongoing — The court noted continuous unauthorized activities in multiple villages.
  • Next hearing on July 25 — The court has scheduled further discussions regarding this matter.

The MoHUA has stated that while over 1,511 unauthorized colonies have been notified for regularization, those in Zone ‘O’ are excluded. However, temporary protection under the Special Provisions Act will remain until December 31, 2026. The court has also ordered the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to prevent any new construction, even under the guise of repairs. This stringent approach aims to halt illegal activities and protect the delicate ecosystem of the Yamuna floodplains.

In light of the ongoing construction issues, the court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to present a status report detailing actions taken against concerned engineers and the measures initiated against illegal structures. A meeting is set for June 8, involving officials from the MoHUA, DDA, and MCD to devise strategies for curbing unauthorized construction and implementing demolition drives in Zone ‘O’.
