So President Cyril Ramaphosa has put out this big call for all South Africans to get behind Bafana Bafana for the World Cup . And reading his message,it feels like he's talking about something much bigger than just a football tournament.
The team is heading for its first FIFA World Cup since 2010,which is huge deal tbh . The whole thing is being co-hosted by Mexico, the US,and Canada, and it all kicks off on June 11 with South Africa playing against Mexico.
And Ramaphosa is really trying to frame this as a moment for entire country . He said in his weekly newsletter that the team carries the hopes and dreams of more than 62 million South Africans. He's calling them ambassadors for a diverse nation, which is a heavy responsibility ah.
He is saying the team itself is a symbol of South Africa's unity, with players from different races, cultures and all . And he's connecting it to how sport in the country is supposed to be about respect and fairness, all those constitutional values.
This is where it gets really interesting . He brought up the 1995 Rugby World Cup and that iconic image of Nelson Mandela wearing Springbok jersey. That was such powerful moment for uniting the country back then.
Few things standing out from his message:
- Bafana Bafana back in World Cup after long gap since 2010.
- Ramaphosa's call is for whole country to unite behind team.
- He's connecting this to bigger idea of national progress and unity .
And he even said this, word for word: "Regardless of how Bafana Bafana fare in the tournament, their participation is as rich with meaning as 1995 Rugby World Cup." That’s a very strong statement to make . He's saying win or lose, just being there is a victory for the nation's spirit.
So the whole point is not just about winning the trophy . It's about celebrating the team and also celebrating the progress the country has made toward becoming a united,non-racial,democratic society.
His final message was really inspiring,he wrote "For 90 minutes,as they play for our country,we will not be divided by language, race, province, club,or circumstance. One Team. One Nation. Behind Bafana. Behind South Africa. United by our Flag, inspired by our Team. 62 million cheering voices. One Dream."
It's beautiful thought, this idea of everyone coming together for 90 minutes only . But you have to wonder if sport can really heal all the divisions, even just for a little while…
