So this Cricket Canada news is honestly quite something . Getting suspended by the ICC is not small thing ah.
It all went down during an ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad, and the official reason was "serious breaches of membership obligations" . Sounds very serious.
But Cricket Canada's reaction is what's catching my eye . They are calling the suspension "unexpected" which feels bit strange. Their official line is, "The suspension was unexpected,as Jurist-Led Committee has already commenced its work and is scheduled to deliver interim recommendations within two weeks."
And honestly, this is where things get uncomfortable. If a committee is already working on fixing issues, how can a suspension be a complete surprise? Something is not adding up .
The one good piece of news in all this is that national teams can still participate in ICC events,so at least the players won't suffer directly because of this administrative mess . That's a big relief rn .
And now Cricket Canada is talking about a big Corrective & Preventative Action Plan,or CAPA . It includes a full Root Cause Analysis and they've given themselves 90 days to fix things. It all sounds very formal, but I guess they need to show the ICC they're not taking this lightly.
A few things seem to be focus here:
- Cricket Canada is taking immediate action to rectify governance and financial deficiencies .
- An independent jurist-led committee has been established to drive reform and ensure accountability.
- The organization aims to enhance governance structures and prevent future irregularities .
And of course, the new board is making it clear that the current leadership is not responsible for these problems . They are putting the blame on "previous management practices" for whole situation.
This new independent committee is being chaired by Dasha Peregoudova, and apparently she and her team have full access to all financial records and can conduct any interviews they need . So they are trying to be transparent now,at least on paper.
But you just have to wonder what really happened behind scenes for the ICC to take such a huge step . All this talk about plans and committees is one thing, but rebuilding trust with the international body is a whole different challenge…
