Bad sewage system is not small thing ah,especially when city keeps growing .
As of June 20,2026,officials from Coimbatore Corporation are saying UGD projects are moving well and expected completion timeline is around one to two years . That sounds decent on paper, but people living through dug-up roads and construction mess will obviously want work to finish faster.
And main UGD scheme covers big areas like Vadavalli,Veerakeralam,Kavundampalayam, and Thudiyalur . Cost itself is ₹935.92 crore,so this is not some small local repair work . It is big city-level project.
Population planning part also stands out . Design is looking at growth from 2.39 lakh in 2020 to 4.16 lakh by 2050 . Daily sewage generation is estimated at 28.29 MLD now and projected to rise to 49.18 MLD by 2050 . So clearly, officials are trying to prepare for future load, not just current problem .
Few key things from project side:
- Approximately 65% of UGD scheme has been completed in Zone 5 .
- Improved sewage systems should make daily urban living conditions better.
- Projects are expected to benefit over 1 lakh residents across various wards .
But when we look area-wise,numbers are quite massive . In Vadavalli and Veerakeralam, the project includes laying 230.233 km of sewer pipelines and constructing 8,737 manholes . Out of that,135.2 km of pipelines have already been completed, which means 66% progress rate.
And Kavundampalayam and Thudiyalur side is even bigger in scale . There, work includes 298.944 km of sewer pipelines and 11,362 manholes, with 164.5 km of pipelines laid so far . Imagine scale of digging, laying, closing, testing… residents must be seeing this daily only .
Another project linked to Ondipudur sewage treatment plant is also near finish line, with around 95% completion since it started in February 2024 . This one costs ₹185 crore and is meant for uncovered areas including Ganapathy and Gandhimanagar . Tbh,95% sounds very close, but that last stretch in public works sometimes takes its own sweet time .
And overall, this is one of those city projects where public may complain during work, but later everyone benefits if execution is proper . Cleaner streets, better sewage handling, less health risk… all good on paper . But question is whether final delivery will match these big numbers and timelines or people will still be waiting through another monsoon…
