This whole INDIA bloc revival talk feels like one of those political stories where everyone agrees BJP has to be challenged, but nobody fully agrees who should lead that challenge . And honestly, that is not small problem ah.
In recent weeks, several Opposition parties have again started talking about bringing INDIA bloc back into serious action to counter expanding influence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across country . Push became louder after Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee called for wider anti-BJP coalition .
And then Communist Party of India (Marxist) also echoed that mood and urged INDIA bloc to consolidate . Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also supported Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's assertion that current Union government could collapse within year . Big claim, obviously . But politics is not just about statements.
Because on ground, many parties still want to fight elections independently only . That is where whole unity picture starts looking shaky .
Look at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP),led by Arvind Kejriwal . AAP contested 2024 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with Congress, but failed to win any of seven parliamentary seats in Delhi . After that setback,AAP decided to contest subsequent Assembly elections alone, and that also ended in another loss.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- INDIA bloc was formed to counter PM Modi's governance and BJP's growing power .
- Seat-sharing,leadership roles and Congress's role are still creating friction.
- Recent election results have weakened regional players and made unity more complicated .
In West Bengal,Mamata Banerjee has earlier kept distance from broader Opposition alliance, but recent electoral defeats seem to have brought back interest in consolidating Opposition efforts . Same time, old rivalries in West Bengal and Kerala are not going to disappear just because national-level leaders hold one meeting.
The alliance originally came up as response to PM Modi's administration and rise of assertive Hindu nationalism . At first,it did slow BJP momentum in some way, with BJP securing only 240 seats in 2024 Lok Sabha elections and falling short of majority . But after that, internal discomfort came out fast.
Regional parties have accused Congress of trying to expand in states where they already dominate . Some also feel Congress contested seats that allies expected would be left for them . In Rajasthan,Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand too,Opposition parties have often campaigned separately despite all this unity talk .
And tbh, leadership issue is still biggest emotional point here . Leaders like Banerjee and Yadav are clearly not very comfortable with projecting Rahul Gandhi as face of alliance, and they prefer collective leadership model. Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra did bring visibility and support, but doubts around leadership and election-winning ability are still there among regional players.
Akhilesh Yadav recently indicated INDIA bloc could jointly contest 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, but right now that sounds more like hope than fixed plan . INDIA bloc is united against BJP,yes, but divided by ambition, old wounds,state-level fights and fear of becoming junior partner… so how long can this arrangement actually hold?
