Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal has publicly criticized the state government for its apparent hypocrisy regarding fuel pricing. He pointed out that while the government frequently blames the Central administration for escalating fuel prices, it simultaneously imposes heavy taxes on petrol and diesel, thereby profiting from the citizens' hardships. The current tax structure includes a staggering 16.58% value-added tax (VAT) on petrol, coupled with an additional 10% tax, which translates to approximately ₹18-19 per litre in taxes. Diesel, too, is heavily taxed with a 13.10% VAT and a 10% surcharge, leading to about ₹13-14 per litre in taxes.
Baliawal expressed his frustration that, despite the Central government's recent reduction of excise duties by up to ₹13 per litre to provide relief to the public, the Punjab government has chosen to enhance its revenue streams instead. He stated, "The Punjab government has failed to disclose the significant revenue it earns from state-imposed taxes and has not extended similar benefits to the public." This lack of transparency and accountability has left many citizens, particularly transporters, farmers, and small business owners, grappling with rising operational costs amidst ongoing inflation.
- Heavy taxation on fuel — Punjab imposes high VAT and additional taxes on petrol and diesel.
- Call for tax reduction — Baliawal urges a minimum ₹10 reduction in VAT to ease public burden.
- Economic challenges for citizens — Rising fuel costs affect transporters, farmers, and small businesses.
The BJP spokesperson went on to accuse the Aam Aadmi Party government of engaging in what he termed as political theatrics. He argued that at a time when the populace is already facing significant economic challenges, the government should prioritize public welfare rather than generating additional revenue at the expense of its citizens. Baliawal concluded by urging the Punjab government to act swiftly in reducing fuel taxes to provide much-needed relief to the people.
This ongoing debate over fuel taxation highlights a broader issue of accountability and governance in Punjab, as citizens seek transparency and action from their leaders in addressing economic pressures. The BJP's stance reflects a growing concern among voters regarding the impact of government policies on their daily lives.
