Amnesty International Alarmed by Enforced Disappearances of Pashtun Activists in Pakistan

Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of enforced disappearances involving Pashtun human rights activists in Pakistan. The organization highlighted the recent abduction of Fareedullah Afridi, a member of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement, from Peshawar. Despite family pleas, local police have reportedly refused to investigate. This incident follows the earlier detention of activists Hanif Pashteen and Noor Ullah Tareen. Amnesty is calling for immediate transparency and the safe release of these individuals to prevent further human rights violations.

Key Takeaways

  • Amnesty warns of rising disappearances of Pashtun activists
  • Fareedullah Afridi abducted from Peshawar on May 18, 2026

This one is honestly very worrying because enforced disappearance cases always leave families stuck in worst kind of fear . Amnesty International has now raised serious alarm on Wednesday over Pashtun activists allegedly being picked up in Pakistan, and situation is not sounding like one random case.

According to Amnesty International,Fareedullah Afridi,a prominent member of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM),was taken on May 18 . He was reportedly abducted from Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province .

And what makes it more disturbing is family’s struggle after that . Despite repeated requests from family, police have reportedly refused to register First Information Report (FIR) or even start formal probe . That silence from authorities is not small thing ah.

Few points standing out clearly here:

  • Fareedullah Afridi missing — abducted from Peshawar city on May 18
  • PTM activists targeted — ongoing pattern of arbitrary state detention
  • Lack of transparency — police refusal to file FIRs or investigate cases

But this is not being treated as isolated case by rights groups . Last month,Amnesty International wrote to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi regarding disappearance of Hanif Pashteen and Noor Ullah Tareen . These PTM members were taken into custody on November 12, 2025,as they were leaving Provincial Assembly .

And tbh, this is where fear becomes bigger . Secret detention means nobody outside knows where person is,who is holding them,or what condition they are in . Amnesty International has warned that such detentions increase risk of torture and ill-treatment .

The rights body has demanded that Pakistan disclose whereabouts of all detained activists immediately . It also said,"Their continued disappearance is part of larger crackdown against the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement."

At same time, this whole pattern is raising very uncomfortable questions about dissent and state power . If families cannot even get FIR registered, then what option is left for them?

International human rights standards say those responsible for these abductions must be held accountable so victims and families can get justice . But for now, families are still waiting, activists are still missing, and silence around these cases is only making everything darker…
