AI-171 Crash: Compensation Delays Affect 9% of Victims' Families

Key Takeaways

  • 9% of victims' families still awaiting compensation
  • Documentation issues delay acceptance for some families
  • Air India returns personal items to victims' families

As tragic anniversary of Air India flight AI-171 crash comes closer, whole thing again feels heavy . 260 lives were lost, and nearly one year later, families are still dealing with compensation, paperwork, belongings and unanswered feelings all together.

And honestly, this is not just about money only . Around 9% of families have still not accepted ex-gratia compensation of ₹1 crore, while around 4% have yet to receive interim payment of ₹25 lakh . That gap may look small on paper, but for families waiting after such disaster,it is not small thing ah .

Air India and parent company Tata Sons have already disbursed financial aid running into hundreds of millions of rupees . There are two separate packages here, one from airline operator and another philanthropic fund set up by Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran.

That Tata Sons fund includes blanket compensation of ₹1 crore for families of deceased victims . Air India says 91% of families have accepted this payout, but some families are still unresponsive or stuck because situation is more complicated than just signing one form.

Few things standing out clearly here:

  • Documentation issues are delaying some families due to incomplete paperwork or ongoing inheritance disputes.
  • Indemnity waivers concerns are making families worry about future claims and legal rights.
  • Personal belongings recovery is still going on,with many items already identified and catalogued .

But tbh,the waiver part is where discomfort comes in . After losing family member in such crash, any paper asking people to sign away something will obviously make them pause. Nobody wants to accept money today and then realise later that future options got affected.

According to Air India, the remaining 4% of families awaiting interim compensation have not submitted necessary documentation, which has slowed acceptance process . Airline has also said there is no deadline or pressure to accept offers made to them, which is good to hear, but families still have to process everything at their own pace .

And then there is issue of personal belongings . Families of 15 deceased passengers are still waiting to receive digital devices recovered from crash site, and some have even declined to take back personal items because of various concerns. More than 22,000 personal items are being returned with help of external specialists, and 16 out of 25 digital devices have been returned after security screenings.

Families are using interactive platform to view and claim belongings, but ongoing investigation has clearly left many unsure about what to do next . Money, paperwork, devices, memories… all of it is connected to one loss that cannot really be settled neatly.

And maybe that is why this whole compensation process feels so delicate rn,because for many families, accepting something may also feel like closing door before they are ready…
