Wyndham Clark came in with huge six-shot advantage, and still somehow final round became tense enough to make people wonder if collapse was coming.
And that is what made it interesting. Clark had chance to complete wire-to-wire victory, but at same time, one bad stretch could have turned it into one of golf's most painful endings . Not small thing ah,especially when Sam Burns was pushing and crowd also seemed more on Burns' side.
Clark eventually finished tournament at four under par and secured his second championship title in four years . That sounds clean on paper, but actual final day at Shinnecock Hills was not that simple.
Wind conditions eased,so course became little more forgiving and players could attack more . But this 7,440-yard course still tested everyone properly. Clark had to keep control while Burns kept coming closer, and that kind of mental pressure is different only.
Few things standing out clearly from this finale:
- Wyndham Clark started final round with six-shot advantage .
- Sam Burns kept pressure on him while crowd appeared to favor Burns .
- Clark made birdie on 10th and a putt from 24 feet on 16th.
And honestly, those moments on back nine probably saved whole thing for Clark. His lead had started shrinking after few early struggles, and crowd reactions after his mistakes made atmosphere even more intense.
But he did not fully crack . Birdie on 10th helped him breathe again, and that putt from 24 feet on 16th gave him cushion when match was getting dangerous. That is where composure matters more than swing sometimes.
Clark celebrating with his caddie David Pelekoudas felt like release of all that pressure at once . Because this win was not just about scorecard,it was about surviving final day when everything around him was trying to pull him into doubt.
And now after second championship title in four years, people will obviously look at Wyndham Clark differently in golf world . Still, one question stays in mind… was this start of something bigger for him,or just another wild US Open story that almost went wrong…
