World Cup always becomes that place where big names start looking even bigger, and this year also same thing is happening . Lionel Messi,Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland are already making defenders look stressed before match even starts.
Messi has just hit hat-trick against Algeria,Mbappe has scored brace against Senegal, and suddenly same old question comes back: how exactly do you stop players like this? Not slow them for 10 minutes, but actually control them for full match ah.
Former Everton and Wales defender Ashley Williams has given interesting view on this, and honestly,it sounds simple but doing it on ground is totally different matter . He says stopping such strikers is not one defender’s job,it needs whole backline and midfield moving together.
On Messi,Williams said,"You need to push him into comfortable areas," which sounds strange at first because why would anyone push Messi anywhere comfortable? But his point is more about positioning, body shape and not letting him enter zones where he can damage you badly.
And forcing Messi onto weaker foot also doesn’t really solve much . With 120 international goals, his control, balance and calmness are at that level where normal defensive tricks don’t always work . He can look trapped and still somehow come out with ball.
Few things defenders need to get right:
- Teamwork is essential — Defenders must communicate and work in unison to limit strikers' effectiveness .
- Study player tendencies — Understanding the unique movements of each striker can inform defensive strategies.
- Adapt to the pace of play — Adjusting defensive rhythm based on striker's style is crucial for success.
Mbappe is different headache altogether . Williams remembered facing him in international friendly and said,"Mbappe is more direct than Messi." And that line says everything only . With Mbappe,it is speed, intensity, quick burst, and if defender switches off for even one second,he is gone.
That also means defending Mbappe is not just about watching Mbappe . His runs open space for other French forwards too,so whole attacking unit becomes problem . One player drags defender, another one gets chance, and suddenly team is chasing shadows .
Then there is Erling Haaland, who is another type of danger . Williams says he can hurt defenses even without ball, and that is actually scary part . His positioning makes defenders uncomfortable because he is always waiting for that one pass in behind .
Williams put it clearly:"You’ve got to stop the balls in behind" . So with Haaland, defenders are not only marking him, they are also reading midfielders, judging timing, checking runs, and making decisions fast . One late step and damage is done.
And as World Cup moves ahead, this defender-versus-superstar battle is becoming more interesting than people expected . Teams can plan, talk, analyse video and still one Messi touch, one Mbappe sprint, one Haaland run can spoil everything… so who really has answer for this?
