Something very serious is unfolding right now in Middle East and honestly,the burial of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has become backdrop to what looks like rapidly collapsing peace attempt between US and Iran.
Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28 . His funeral ceremony began in Tehran on July 3 and he was finally buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 11 . More than four months passed between his death and burial,which itself tells you how complicated and dangerous everything has been during this period .
And this is where things get really uncomfortable to follow .
Just days before burial,on July 9,Iranian forces allegedly targeted three civilian tankers in Strait of Hormuz . Washington responded with military strikes almost immediately . So during what should have been period of mourning,both sides were actively escalating against each other .
Worth remembering that Iran has kept Strait of Hormuz effectively blockaded since early March . That blockade itself started as retaliation for February 28 airstrikes that killed Khamenei . Strait of Hormuz is not small corridor — it handles critical portion of global oil shipments and blocking it has consequences felt far beyond just US and Iran.
Few key facts that are important to understand here:
- Both US and Iran had signed Memorandum of Understanding in Switzerland on June 17,aimed at reducing hostilities after multiple ceasefire violations .
- US launched additional strikes on Iranian targets around same time funeral proceedings were happening,and explosions were also reported in several cities in southern Iran,though US denied involvement.
- Trump held direct call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussing American military movements in Gulf region,while also making several aggressive public statements about Iran's actions.
That Switzerland MoU signed on June 17 was supposed to be stabilising moment . Both nations had apparently agreed to pull back from edge . But right now,honestly,that agreement looks like it is falling apart from every direction.
Tehran has already warned it has retaliated and will deliver what it called "firm and decisive response" to what Iran sees as ongoing violations of that Switzerland agreement . So both sides are pointing fingers at each other for breaking deal while continuing military actions.
And Donald Trump's statements during this whole period have not been calming either . Multiple bellicose public remarks about Iran's actions have only added more heat to situation that was already burning badly .
Other nations are watching this closely because conflict of this scale does not stay contained . Global oil markets,regional governments,shipping routes… everything gets pulled into instability when US-Iran tensions reach this level.
Experts are warning that continued aggression from either side risks creating spiral of violence that would make any diplomatic solution nearly impossible to achieve . Both nations signed that MoU just weeks ago,and already it seems like both sides are arguing the other one broke it first.
