Something really special has come out of space recently, and honestly it is making a lot of people in Kerala and across India stop and smile for moment . Anil Menon, first NASA astronaut of Malayali heritage, has sent his very first message from International Space Station . And the warmth in that message… you can feel it even from 400 kilometres above Earth.
Shortly after arriving at ISS aboard Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft,Menon recorded heartfelt video expressing gratitude to family, colleagues, and all organizations that supported his journey . In his own words he said,"Hello from the International Space Station. It's day one for me, and I just wanted to say thank you to some of the folks that help make this dream a reality."
And honestly, this is where it gets personal in best possible way.
He specifically called out individuals like Anna,Grace, and James by name . He even paused to wish Grace happy birthday during that message . Imagine being in space on day one and still remembering to do that . That kind of human connection, even from orbit,is not small thing .
Menon is now embarking on ambitious eight-month mission at ISS where he and fellow astronauts will conduct hundreds of scientific investigations across medicine, biology, and technology development . He will be working alongside international partners including NASA,Roscosmos, and European Space Agency . That is serious collaborative work happening at extraordinary altitude .
Few things that stand out clearly about this man's background:
- Before joining NASA,Menon served in high-pressure environments including combat zones in Afghanistan where he provided emergency medical care.
- Menon holds medical degree from Stanford and studied neurobiology at Harvard, and was selected as NASA astronaut in 2021.
- His wife Anna Wilhelm also went to orbit during SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission in 2024,making them genuinely remarkable couple.
His roots go deep into Kerala, with father hailing from Ottapalam . That connection to Indian heritage is clearly something that has stayed with him even as his career took him far beyond anything most people could imagine . He also volunteered with Himalayan Rescue Association at some point, building skills in expedition and wilderness medicine alongside all that formal scientific training .
Before astronaut selection,Menon joined NASA back in 2014 as flight surgeon . He later moved to SpaceX where he played key role in establishing company's medical program and helped prepare for crewed missions . His work also contributed to development of Starship,next-generation spacecraft being built for future lunar and Martian exploration . That is genuinely impressive range of contribution across different organizations.
And this eight-month mission is not casual thing . Living and working aboard ISS for that long requires physical endurance, mental strength, and constant scientific focus . He is carrying weight of whole mission on his shoulders while also representing something meaningful for Malayali community and broader Indian diaspora watching from ground.
Honestly, stories like this make you think about how many different paths, sacrifices, and quiet years of preparation go into one moment like day one at space station . His family back in Kerala, his colleagues, his wife who herself has been to orbit… all of it somehow converges in that single video message where he just says thank you to people who helped make dream real .
What happens over these next eight months, what discoveries come out of those hundreds of investigations, how this mission shapes future work on Starship and beyond… none of that is fully known yet. But something about seeing person with roots in Ottapalam floating in space and wishing someone happy birthday from orbit stays with you in way that is difficult to fully explain…
