This Agartala meeting on May 31, 2026 feels like one of those power-sector discussions which sounds technical from outside, but actually affects daily life directly . Because in Tripura, power supply, revenue collection, smart meters, solar plans… all these are not just file topics .
Union Minister for Power & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar met Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to review state's power sector and urban growth plans . Main idea was to prepare action plan for operational problems faced by power department and its public sector undertakings (PSUs).
And honestly, the big pressure point here seems to be money leakage and weak collection system . Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) came up in discussion because it is meant to improve efficiency of Distribution Companies (DISCOMs).
Khattar also spoke about Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses, which is not small thing ah . If DISCOMs keep losing money through technical issues, billing gaps or poor collections, then whole power system becomes financially weak only.
Few points clearly stood out from meeting:
- Existing government consumer meters are to be converted to prepaid systems for better revenue collection .
- Tripura committed to faster rollout of smart meters for better monitoring and efficiency.
- Rooftop solar systems are planned for 2 lakh consumers by March 2027 .
And tbh, prepaid meters can become sensitive issue also . On paper,it improves collection and control, but for consumers, especially government-linked users and low-income households, implementation style will matter a lot.
There was also discussion around PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to increase clean energy access in remote areas . Rooftop solar plan sounds good, but actual installation, maintenance and awareness on ground will decide whether people really benefit .
Khattar reviewed resource adequacy and intra-State transmission planning too . He advised Tripura to match infrastructure expansion with expected demand growth, and Manik Saha assured that state will speed up augmentation of intra-State transmission framework as per resource adequacy plan .
Centre also assured Government of India support for Tripura's development goals, while Chief Minister Manik Saha said necessary measures will be taken for quick implementation of sanctioned projects . Good words are there, plans are there, but now real question is how fast this moves from meeting table to homes and streets…
