China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was once projected like big game changer for Pakistan's economy, but recent picture feels more like debt, security pressure and half-finished expectations.
A recent report from European Times says project, initially valued at around $62 billion, has not delivered that promised industrial transformation and regional connectivity . That is not small thing ah,because whole idea was supposed to connect western China to Arabian Sea through Gwadar Port under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
But problem seems to be in basic planning itself . Report argues CPEC focused heavily on roads, ports and infrastructure, but without proper industrial ecosystem around it . And honestly, roads alone cannot create growth if factories, jobs, stable governance and productive industries are missing.
This is where whole “corridor” idea starts feeling uncomfortable . If infrastructure is standing but economy around it is weak, then it becomes more like expensive liability than growth engine.
Few things standing out clearly in this CPEC mess:
- By 2025,Pakistan's circular debt crisis had left billions unpaid to Chinese power producers.
- Chinese engineers have increasingly become targets of militant attacks.
- Gwadar Port was initially projected to become major commercial hub,but has not met expectations.
Financial side also looks heavy now . Many CPEC project agreements reportedly guaranteed high returns to Chinese firms, and with Pakistan's currency weakening during broader economic crisis, those payments are becoming more painful for Pakistan.
And tbh, instead of fixing structural issues inside Pakistan's power sector,CPEC seems to have added another layer of financial liability on already fragile system . That is dangerous because power sector debt was already major headache.
Security situation has also worsened, especially in Baluchistan . Insurgent groups there reportedly see corridor as external exploitation, and this has increased attacks on Chinese workers and engineers . So now project is not just economic challenge, but security headache also .
Gwadar Port is another big disappointment in this whole story . It was supposed to become major commercial hub,but expectations and reality are clearly not matching rn . Port, roads and promises are there, but actual transformation is still missing .
And now Pakistan and China both seem stuck with difficult questions . Can CPEC still become what it was promised to be,or has it already turned into one more expensive burden dressed up as development…
