During a regional review meeting on May 25, 2026, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh underscored the immense potential of the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors in propelling economic growth in the Northeast. He expressed that the development of these sectors would not only benefit individuals but also the region as a whole, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for comprehensive development.
Singh highlighted various initiatives launched under the Central government's leadership, including the Blue Revolution and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PM-MSY). He noted that fish production in the Northeast had seen a remarkable increase from 3.78 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 7.05 lakh tonnes in 2025, showcasing the region's growing capabilities.
- Investment of ₹2,228 crore — The Central government has allocated significant funds to support the development of fisheries and animal husbandry in the Northeast.
- Integrated Aquaparks initiative — Singh announced plans for 11 Integrated Aquaparks, enhancing infrastructure and promoting aquaculture in the region.
- Cluster-based fish farming — The government aims to establish notified clusters to bolster fish production and support local farmers.
Singh also mentioned the government's commitment to improving cooperative societies, expanding artificial insemination services, and enhancing technology adoption in animal husbandry. He remarked on the remarkable growth in milk, egg, and meat production across the Northeastern states, urging local governments to harness this momentum for further progress.
As part of the government’s strategy, Singh invited state officials to collaborate closely with the Center, monitor project implementations, and adopt best practices. The Union Minister expressed optimism that with the right support and infrastructure, the Northeast can achieve self-sufficiency in these vital sectors, ultimately improving livelihoods and empowering local communities. Both Singh and Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian reiterated the importance of promoting local goods and reducing dependence on outside supplies, paving the way for a self-reliant Northeast.
