So Telangana Advocates Protection Act is finally in effect . And honestly,it's about time. With so many attacks happening against lawyers, this was badly needed .
The act, which was passed in Assembly in March, was officially brought into force on Tuesday by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's government . The Law Department issued the proper Government Order,G.O No. 41,to make it happen statewide.
And tbh,the push for this law became urgent after that horrible murder of advocate Khaja Moizuddin in Hyderabad on May 23 . That incident really shocked everyone and showed how dangerous things have become for legal professionals.
It's just crazy to think someone can be targeted and killed just for doing their professional duty ah .
This new act is supposed to give some real protection . idea is to create a safer environment so advocates can work without constantly looking over their shoulder.
Few things this law promises:
- Police support is now mandatory for advocates who are facing threats while doing their work.
- There will be a proper grievance redressal system to handle complaints from legal professionals.
- It also gives protection against false cases and other kinds of harassment.
Minister for Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu mentioned that this was drafted after talking with Bar Council of Telangana and other legal groups . So it's not just government decision, they have involved the community. Now Telangana is one of the few states like Karnataka and Rajasthan to have such a law.
And details from the Moizuddin case show why this is so critical . Police arrested several people, including local Congress leader Mujahid Alam Khan, who allegedly planned the whole thing over some Waqf property disputes. This shows how high the stakes can get.
The government says the goal is to boost safety and security for all advocates .
But you know, passing a law is one thing . Making sure it is implemented properly on the ground is a whole different battle . Will this actually change the situation and make people think twice before attacking a lawyer… that's the real question.
