The Tamil Nadu government has taken decisive action by suspending operations at 23 stone quarries in the Virudhunagar district due to confirmed violations of mining regulations. Inspections revealed that these quarries were conducting operations beyond their permitted lease boundaries, prompting the intervention. This significant move is part of a broader effort by the government to clamp down on illegal mining activities and enhance oversight of mineral extraction throughout the state.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Department of Natural Resources, under the guidance of Minister Dr T.K. Prabhu. Following a comprehensive review, the department conducted an extensive assessment of quarry operations in Virudhunagar, employing advanced drone technology to ensure precise measurements of quarrying activities. This innovative approach has allowed authorities to effectively monitor compliance with approved lease conditions.
- 23 quarries suspended — for exceeding permitted mining boundaries.
- Drone technology utilized — to enhance monitoring and compliance verification.
- Focus on illegal mining — part of a broader initiative to regulate mineral extraction.
The drone survey, which covered 76 quarries, yielded critical insights into operational irregularities at several sites. Following these findings, Minister Dr T.K. Prabhu convened a review meeting with officials from the Geology and Mining Department to discuss necessary actions. The outcome was the temporary suspension of the identified quarries, pending further investigation and legal proceedings.
This decisive action reflects the state government's commitment to maintaining regulatory integrity within the mining sector. Officials have highlighted that the use of drone technology not only bolsters monitoring capabilities but also aids in promptly identifying discrepancies in mining operations. Moving forward, the government plans to implement additional measures based on the detailed findings from the drone surveys and ongoing investigations, ensuring strict adherence to legal frameworks in all mining activities.
