Tamil Nadu government bringing biometric and Face ID attendance at State Secretariat from June 1 honestly feels like one of those changes that looks simple on paper, but can create lot of office discussion inside .
From June 1,all officers and staff at State Secretariat will have to mark attendance through biometric and Face ID verification . This is being called first formal introduction of such system inside Secretariat, and Human Resources Management Department has already issued circular for it.
And main idea is clear only. Government wants attendance tracking to become more transparent, more disciplined and less dependent on old manual habits.
But one interesting part is that manual attendance is not going away immediately . As per circular, staff must continue maintaining manual attendance records also until further notice. So for now,it is basically digital system plus old register side by side .
Few things standing out here:
- Employees must use biometric or Face ID systems to record attendance.
- Staff are expected to report for duty before 10 a.m. to ensure attendance is logged accurately.
- System may later extend to other departments based on this pilot's success.
And tbh,10 a.m . rule is going to be main talking point for many employees. Because once digital entry starts, late reporting becomes visible immediately,no adjustment,no quiet correction later .
This system had earlier gone through trial phase, but it was temporarily suspended because employees had raised concerns . Now after operational issues were addressed, government has decided to fully roll it out.
Officials have also indicated that departments like Food and Cooperation are looking at similar measures, though biometric attendance has not yet been made compulsory there . So State Secretariat looks like first big test case before wider push across government offices .
Honestly, this is where things get slightly uncomfortable also. Discipline in office is one side, but employees may still worry about technical glitches,Face ID failure, biometric errors and how strictly these records will be used .
And if this works smoothly,it may become model for more departments across Tamil Nadu . But if daily problems start from June 1 itself, then same attendance system meant to fix discipline may become another headache inside office corridors…
