This Kerala shigellosis situation is honestly getting worrying now . On June 21,2026,health authorities reported another death, and that has taken total fatalities in state for June to six.
Deceased was a 54-year-old woman from Mavoor in Kozhikode district . She passed away on June 20 after being diagnosed with infection, and this is not small thing ah when same month is already seeing repeated cases .
And along with this death, seven additional cases of shigellosis were also confirmed . Two cases each came from Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, and one each from Thrissur,Malappuram, and Wayanad.
What makes it more uncomfortable is number for June itself . Kerala has now recorded 140 cases this month alone, and total confirmed cases in 2026 has reached 216.
Few things standing out clearly in this update:
- Kerala reported sixth shigellosis death in June after 54-year-old woman from Mavoor in Kozhikode district died on June 20
- Seven additional cases were confirmed, two each from Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, and one each from Thrissur,Malappuram, and Wayanad
- 140 shigellosis cases reported in June, total confirmed cases in 2026 at 216
Most cases in June have been reported from Kozhikode,Malappuram, and Wayanad districts . And when names of same districts keep coming again and again, concern naturally shifts toward sanitation, food safety and water quality.
Health Department has asked people to stay careful about hygiene, especially with food and water consumption . Basic things like clean drinking water, proper handwashing and safe food handling suddenly become very serious in such outbreaks .
Officials are also trying to find source of outbreak and stop further spread . Community awareness campaigns are being launched so people can understand symptoms and preventive steps before situation gets worse .
But tbh, when deaths have already reached six in one month and cases are still being added, public fear is understandable . Question now is how quickly authorities can trace source and control spread before more families are affected…
