This NTR birth anniversary tribute feels more than usual political message, honestly . When Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembers Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) on his 103rd birth anniversary,it is not just about one actor or one former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh . It is about someone who became part of Telugu identity itself .
And Modi posted on X saying,"Tributes to the great NTR Garu on his birth anniversary. He is fondly remembered for his commitment towards public welfare and governance which ensured dignity for the poor and marginalised." He also said NTR’s life and ideals continue to be source of immense inspiration.
NTR,who lived from 1923 to 1996 ,had that rare journey ah . Born on May 28, 1923 ,in Nimmakuru,Andhra Pradesh,he first worked as sub-registrar before entering films . From there, life changed completely .
And in cinema,NTR debuted with Mana Desam in 1949 and then became one of biggest names in Telugu films . His roles as mythological figures, especially Lord Krishna in Maya Bazaar and Daana Veera Soora Karna ,made him almost larger than screen for many people .
Few things from his public life stand out clearly:
- NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982,focusing on Telugu pride
- TDP won landslide victory in the 1983 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, changing political power in state
- His government introduced welfare schemes, including subsidised rice program benefiting poor
But his political journey was never smooth only . There were big ups and downs, including brief removal from power because of coup while he was recovering from heart surgery in United States . Still, public support brought him back as Chief Minister, and that comeback is still remembered with lot of emotion.
And Nara Chandrababu Naidu,NTR’s son-in-law and current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, also paid respect on social media . He wrote in Telugu,"In the cinematic world,he left an indelible mark as Rama, as Krishna; in the political arena,he shone as a pole star." That line pretty much explains why people still see NTR in two worlds at same time.
Naidu also called him modern social reformer who brought major changes to lives of Telugu people . NTR passed away due to heart attack in January 1996,but his presence in cinema and politics has not really faded.
And tbh, that is what makes NTR different from many public figures . Some people are remembered for films, some for politics, but he sits somewhere between devotion, admiration and identity… and maybe that is why even today, his name still carries so much weight in Andhra Pradesh…
