A delegation representing the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) met with Chief Electoral Officer S. Chockalingam on Wednesday to advocate for transparency in the upcoming Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Maharashtra. The opposition alliance, comprising leaders from Congress, Shiv Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party, articulated their concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral roll process, emphasizing the necessity for a fair and impartial execution to protect voter rights.
During the meeting, the MVA presented a memorandum consisting of 36 points, all centered on ensuring that the electoral revision is conducted without bias. They expressed apprehension about prior instances in other states where voters from specific communities were allegedly excluded without adequate notice. The MVA demanded that no names be removed from the electoral rolls without a formal notice at least seven days in advance, allowing voters a fair opportunity to respond.
- Voter base growth of 3.5 crore — The MVA highlighted that Maharashtra's voter base has expanded significantly over the past 25 years, underscoring the need for a thorough revision process.
- Request for extended review period — They proposed that the electoral roll revision could span one-and-a-half to two years, given the absence of major elections in the near future.
- Data transparency and accessibility — The MVA insisted on sharing electoral revision data with political parties in accessible formats, ensuring transparency in the process.
Furthermore, the MVA leaders stressed that rushing the revision process, as witnessed in other states, creates an environment of panic and distrust among the electorate. They reiterated the importance of maintaining public faith in the democratic process, asserting that a meticulous approach to the electoral roll revision is vital for the integrity of future elections.
In a press conference following the meeting, MVA leaders including Aaditya Thackeray and Shashikant Shinde emphasized the need for diligence and transparency in the electoral process, which they believe is essential to uphold democratic values and ensure that every citizen's right to vote is protected.
